Privacy policy

Effective September 17, 2026 · Applies to the 5km iOS, Android and watch apps, and support website

5km is a running tracker that works without an account. Running records are processed and stored on your device and are not sent to a server operated by the developer.

1. Operator and contact

Operator and privacy contact: Seungchul Lee (이승철)
Email: codinglee@codinglee.com

2. Information used by the app

  • Location and running records: GPS location, route, distance, time, pace, and elevation provide your running record and analysis.
  • Motion: Device motion features measure cadence in steps per minute.
  • Optional profile: Your nickname and weight are stored on your device for display and calorie estimates. They are not used to create an account.
  • Photos: Photos you take or select are used to create running photo cards on your device.
  • Settings: Target distance, voice guidance, metronome, and other preferences are stored on your device.

This information is not collected or retained on the developer’s server. The app does not include advertising or an analytics SDK for tracking user behavior.

Optional Health and Apple Watch integration

This optional feature is available from version 1.0.2. When you enable heart rate and allow Health read access, 5km reads heart rate, measurement times, and source information from Apple Health to display readings during runs and show averages, maximums, and graphs in your history. Other watches are supported when they write heart rate to Health; delayed readings can be imported later from a run’s details.

Enabling Apple Watch measurement starts a workout in the 5km Watch app, which requests separate Health permissions. Heart rate and workout state are transferred between your paired iPhone and Watch. When you choose to save, the Watch workout and heart rate are also saved to Apple Health.

Readings and source information are processed and stored on your device with the run. They are not sent to the developer’s server or used for advertising, marketing, or user tracking. You can revoke Health access in the Health app or device settings. Revoking access does not automatically delete records already saved in 5km.

Deleting a run from 5km also deletes its locally stored heart rate. Original readings and workouts in Apple Health are separate and can be managed and deleted in Health or Fitness. Apple Health sync and backups follow Apple’s policies and your device settings.

Optional Android Health Connect and Wear OS integration

When you enable heart rate and grant Health Connect read access on Android, 5km reads heart rate, measurement times and source information to show readings during a run and analyze heart rate in your history. Readings from other watches are available only if their companion app syncs them to Health Connect; delayed syncing may prevent live readings. 5km does not write health data to Health Connect.

On Galaxy Watch and other Wear OS devices, 5km measures heart rate through Health Services after you start measurement in the watch app and grant permissions. Heart rate is transferred to your paired phone using the Wear OS Data Layer provided by Google Play services. Distance, pace, cadence and workout state also pass from the phone to the watch. 5km does not send this information to the developer’s server, advertising services or analytics services. It does not automatically save workouts or heart rate to Samsung Health.

Unsent heart rate is temporarily stored on the watch for up to 24 hours for retransmission after disconnection, and removed after the phone acknowledges receipt. The phone’s received heart-rate cache is also cleared after up to 24 hours. Heart rate saved with a run remains until you delete that run. Original data in Health Connect is separate and can be managed in Health Connect or its source app. You can revoke health read and sensor permissions in Health Connect and device settings.

Use of Health Connect information follows the Health Connect permissions policy, including its Limited Use requirements. Health data is used only for the running features you choose, not for advertising, sale, credit decisions or user tracking.

3. Permissions and background activity

Location access records distance and route. Motion access measures cadence. Camera and photo access support optional running photo cards. Background location and audio allow recording and guidance to continue during an active run when the screen is locked. Android uses a location foreground service with an ongoing workout notification; Wear OS uses a health foreground service during measurement. 5km does not request background Health Connect read access.

You can change these permissions in your device settings at any time. Declining a permission limits the related feature.

4. External services and sharing

The Android version displays an offline GPS route without a map background. Google Play handles app distribution and purchases, and Google Play services provide phone/watch communication. These platform services are subject to Google’s privacy policy.

Apple system features, such as map display, may communicate with Apple to provide their services. Their data handling follows Apple’s privacy policy and your device settings.

When you choose another app in the share sheet, the content you select is passed to that app. Its own privacy policy applies. 5km does not automatically publish running records or photos.

The operator does not sell your running records or provide them to third parties for advertising.

5. Retention and deletion

Running records and settings remain on your device until you delete them or remove the app. Choose Delete run on a run’s detail screen to remove that record. Copies saved in Photos or shared to another app must be deleted separately from those locations.

Data included in iOS device backups is managed by iOS and your backup settings. Android app backup is disabled for 5km. The operator cannot remotely access, change, delete, or restore records stored on your device.

6. Support email and website

If you contact us by email, your reply address, message, and any attachments you choose to send are used to respond to your inquiry. You do not need to include unnecessary location records or sensitive information. Support materials are retained for as long as needed to handle the inquiry and deleted on request unless there is a legitimate reason, such as a legal retention requirement, to keep them.

The support and privacy pages do not contain advertising, analytics scripts, or contact forms. The hosting service may process technical information, such as IP address, access time, and browser details, to deliver and secure the website.

7. Your choices and requests

You can manage your local records and optional profile in the app and withdraw permissions in device settings. Email the contact above to request access, correction, or deletion of support information held by the operator, or to ask a privacy question.

8. Policy changes

We will update this page and its effective date when app features or data handling change. Material privacy changes will be announced in the app or on this page.
